| - Formed in 1967, Genesis are among the top 30 highest-selling recording artists of all time. Their early work is characterized by complex song structures, elaborate instrumentation and the theatrical antics of founder member and vocalist Peter Gabriel, who left the band in 1975. Unable to find a suitable replacement, it was drummer Phil Collins who assumed vocal duties. This change, as well as the departure of guitarist Steve Hackett, two years later, saw the remaining three members (Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford) move into more accessible pop-based music. This change in style resulted in a huge growth in Genesis' popularity throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.In 1996 Collins left to concentrate on his solo work and other projects, leaving erstwhile bandmates Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks to forge ahead with new recruit; Stiltskin vocalist Ray Wilson. This line-up lasted for one album only (1997's %22Calling All Stations%22) and Genesis soon found itself on hiatus after the poor performance and critical reaction of the new album.In 2006 - after years of speculation - Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford reformed Genesis for the successful %22Turn It On Again%22 tour. | - Genesis are an English rock band formed in Godalming, Surrey in January 1967. The band has undergone numerous formations in its history which has included eleven full time members. Since 2006, it has comprised two founding members, keyboardist Tony Banks and bassist and guitarist Mike Rutherford, and drummer and singer Phil Collins, who joined in 1970.Formed by five pupils at Charterhouse School, Genesis worked with singer and producer Jonathan King and released three pop singles and an album, From Genesis to Revelation (1969), for Decca Records. A lack of sales and musical differences led to their split from King and Decca. In 1970, after a period of rehearsals and early gigs, they signed with Charisma Records and evolved into a progressive rock band, releasing a series of successful albums that showcased fantasy-inspired lyrics and more complex song structures and instrumentation, including Foxtrot (1972), Selling England by the Pound (1973), and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974). Their shows during this time were theatrical experiences that used stage design, pyrotechnics, storytelling, and singer Peter Gabriel in costume. When Collins took over lead vocals in 1975 after Gabriel's departure, Genesis's success continued with A Trick of the Tail (1976) and Wind & Wuthering (1976). When guitarist Steve Hackett left in 1977, the group continued as a trio and released ...And Then There Were Three... (1978). Its lead single %22Follow You Follow Me%22 represented a change in their musical direction, becoming more pop-oriented and commercially accessible. Genesis were at their most successful in the 1980s with a series of UK number one albums, including Duke (1980), Abacab (1981), and Genesis (1983), which coincided with Collins's increasing popularity as a solo artist. Invisible Touch (1986) remains their best-selling album, from which all five singles released entered the top five on the US singles chart, with %22Invisible Touch%22 reaching the No. 1 spot. Its follow up, We Can't Dance (1991), continued the band's worldwide success with the hit single %22I Can't Dance%22. In 1996, singer Ray Wilson replaced Collins and recorded Calling All Stations (1997) with Banks and Rutherford. The band went on hiatus in 1998 until Banks, Rutherford, and Collins reunited for the 2007 Turn It On Again Tour. In 2014, Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Collins, and Hackett reunited the documentary Genesis: Together and Apart.Genesis are one of the most successful English rock bands in history. They are one of the best-selling music artists of all time with 21.5 million RIAA-certified albums sold in the US and approximately 130 million sold worldwide. Their discography includes fifteen studio and six live albums, six of which topped the UK chart. They have won numerous awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Concept Music Video with %22Land of Confusion%22. In 2010, Genesis were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
