dct:abstract
%22Nikita%22 is a song by English singer Elton John about the Cold War from his 1985 album Ice on Fire. Released late in the year, the song was successful in many countries and was a top ten hit in almost all of them. The song may have inspired a sudden increase in the popularity of the name for newborn girls in the United States, where it spiked to the 250th most popular name in 1986, rising from rank 800 to 900 in years prior. Ironically, 'Nikita' was and still is an exclusively male name in its country of origin, Russia.
