| - Prof. Charis M. Galanakis (https://charisgalanakis.info/) is a distinguished multidisciplinary scientist with extensive expertise, activities, and recognitions (Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate in 2019, 2021-2023, Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS in 2022, 2024 and Top Cited Scholar by Scilit in 2023, 2024) in food and environmental science and technology, innovation, industry, and academia. He has established the "food waste recovery" discipline and founded the most prominent open innovation network (www.foodwasterecovery.group) worldwide to inspire related professionals to extract high added-value compounds from wasted by-products in all stages of food production and re-utilize them in the food chain. In recent years, his focus has extended to the "future food" domain, encompassing bioeconomy, food security, resilience, sustainability, and the digitalization of food systems.
He has been an Honorary Professor of Agricultural Sciences at Taif University (Saudi Arabia) since 2022 and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Global Excellence and Stature 4.0 at the University of Johannesburg (South Africa) since 2023. Since 2012, he has served as the Research and Innovation Director of Galanakis Laboratories, Chania, Greece (https://chemlab.gr/en/). With over 25 years of experience, he specializes in analyzing wine, food, beverages, and environmental samples and providing consultancy for related industries and local producers.
Since 2014, Prof. Galanakis has acted as a freelance expert, evaluator, and monitor for more than 50 funded projects and proposals for organizations such as the European Commission, World Intellectual Property Organization, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, US Department of Agriculture, Australian Resource Council, and A*STAR in Singapore. As an invited lecturer, he has taught courses on agricultural/food waste treatment, valorization, and recovery at esteemed institutions such as the Technical University of Crete (Greece), Cyprus University of Technology (Cyprus), ISA Lille University (France), and through the ISEKI Food Association's online platform.
In his editorial roles, Prof. Galanakis has served as Editor-in-Chief of Discover Environment (Springer Nature) since 2022 and Discover Food (Springer Nature) since 2021. He is an editorial board member or subject editor for numerous journals, including Trends in Food Science & Technology, Food and Bioproducts Processing, Foods, Journal of Advanced Research, Future Foods, Acta Innovations, Waste Management in Agroecosystems, and Nutrition Food Science & Technology. Prof. Galanakis has authored over 300 scientific documents, including over 100 peer-reviewed articles in ISI-indexed journals, book chapters, conference presentations, and technical briefs for international organizations.
