  • The Funk Brothers were Motown's in-house band and are featured on fairly all the Motown records from 1959 up to 1972. Joe Hunter was the bandleader from 1959 to 1962, Earl Van Dyke from 1963 to 1972. When Motown moved from Detroit to Los Angeles in 1972, The Funk Brothers were disbanded. In 2002 a music documentary was released about The Funk Brothers, called %22Standing In The Shadows Of Motown%22.In the booklet of the 1994 4-CD compilation %22Smokey Robinson & The Miracles: 35th Anniversary Collection%22 there is a survey of all of the members of The Funk Brothers. It is presented by Motown scholar Harry Weinger.   • The Funk Brothers was the nickname of Detroit-based session musicians who performed the backing to most Motown recordings from 1959 until the company moved to Los Angeles in 1972. They are considered one of the most successful groups of studio musicians in music history. The Funk Brothers played on Motown hits such as %22My Girl%22, %22I Heard It Through the Grapevine%22, %22Baby Love%22, %22Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours%22, %22Papa Was a Rollin' Stone%22, %22The Tears of a Clown%22, %22Ain't No Mountain High Enough%22, and %22Heat Wave%22.The role of the Funk Brothers is described in Paul Justman's 2002 documentary film Standing in the Shadows of Motown, based on Allan Slutsky's book of the same name. The opening titles claim that the Funk Brothers have %22played on more number-one hits than the Beatles, Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys combined.%22In 2008 surviving members recorded Live in Orlando, an album and video.
