  • Mary Virginia Martin (December 1, 1913 – November 3, 1990) was an American Tony Award-winning star of stage, film and screen. She received the Donaldson Award and the New York Film Critics Circle Award in 1943 for %22One Touch of Venus%22. In 1955 she received a Tony for %22Peter Pan%22, in 1956 she received an Emmy for appearing in the same role on television. She also received Tony Awards for %22South Pacific%22 and %22The Sound of Music%22. She was honored for her career achievements by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., in 1989. She died, aged 76, from colorectal cancer at her home in Rancho Mirage, California in 1990.

A muse of Rodgers and Hammerstein, she originated many leading roles over her career, including Nellie Forbush in South Pacific and Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music.
