| - US band formed in 1974 following the break up of Jefferson Airplane. While Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen continued their Airplane side-project Hot Tuna, the majority of the band, Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, David Freiberg, John Barbata and Papa John Creach formed Jefferson Starship. The band name had been used four years earlier for the all-star band - including David Crosby, Graham Nash and Grateful Dead members Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart - backing Kantner on his solo-album %22Blows Against the Empire%22, credited to Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship, but it wasn't until 1974 a real band was bearing the name. From 1974 and on the band has undergone almost endless line-up changes finally leaving the band without any of its original members. Grace Slick was let off in 1978 reportedly due to alcoholic misbehaving but rejoined the band in 1981. Band leader Paul Kantner left the group in 1984 and a settlement prohibiting the use of the band name unless all original members were in the band forced the band to change its name to just Starship (2).

dbo:abstract
| - Jefferson Starship is an American rock band formed in the early 1970s by several members of the former psychedelic rock group Jefferson Airplane. The band has undergone several major changes in personnel and genres through the years while retaining the same Jefferson Starship name. The current Jefferson Starship, led by co-founder Paul Kantner, more closely resembles its original mix of psychedelic and electric folk music than the pop-driven tunes it was widely known for in the early to mid-1980s. It is not to be confused with Starship, a spin-off of the group featuring former co-lead singer Mickey Thomas that also periodically tours. The latter group is most frequently identified with the 1980s pop tunes of Jefferson Starship.
