abstract	DJ Screw (born July 20, 1971, Smithville, Texas, USA – died November 16, 2000, Houston, Texas, USA) was an American hip hop DJ who was based in Houston, Texas. DJ Screw originated the %22chopped & screwed%22 style of slowing down and mixing records. DJ Screw made his name by releasing hundreds of screwed mix tapes, which consisted of songs and freestyle sessions.Screw was the centerpiece of The Screwed Up Click, the rap collective from Houston. An interesting observation should be made - contrary to the trend of releasing entire albums from one artist screwed & chopped, DJ Screw never did that to an album.

He was known as a central figure in the Houston hip hop community and was the creator of the now-famous chopped and screwed DJ technique. This creation led to his nickname of %22The Originator%22.Davis was recognized for his various mixtapes and albums mostly on a regional level, until after his death. His legacy was discovered by a wider audience when Houston hip-hop began reaching a national audience in 2005.
