  • Crowded House are a rock band formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1985. Originally active from 1985 to 1996. The founding members were New Zealander [a102974] (vocalist, guitarist, primary songwriter) and Australians [a257794] (drums) and [a257797] (bass). Later band members included Neil Finn's brother [a247008], [a437425] and Americans [a418822] and [a847062]. Mark Hart who had toured with the group joined as a permanent member in 1993. Founding drummer Hester left in the band in May 1994 citing family reasons. He briefly returned for their %22Farewell to the World%22 concerts in Melbourne and Sydney in 1996 and also played on three new tracks recorded for the album %22Recurring Dream%22 (1996). His replacement was Peter Jones who remained with the group until they disbanded in 1996.On 26 March 2005, Hester died by suicide. In 2006, the group re-formed with new drummer Matt Sherrod and released two further albums in 2007 and 2010.In November 2016 they were inducted into the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Hall of Fame.The group hold the distinction of being the only New Zealand band to have made it to #2 in the US Billboard Singles chart, with their single %22Don't Dream It's Over%22.

Later band members included Neil Finn's brother, Tim Finn, and Americans Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod.Originally active from 1985 to 1996, the band has had consistent commercial and critical success in Australia and New Zealand and international chart success in two phases, beginning with their self-titled debut album, which reached number twelve on the US Album Chart in 1987 and provided the Top Ten hits %22Don't Dream It's Over%22 and %22Something So Strong%22. Further international success came in the UK and Europe with their third and fourth albums, Woodface and Together Alone and the compilation album Recurring Dream, which included the hits %22Fall at Your Feet%22, %22Weather with You%22, %22Distant Sun%22, %22Locked Out%22, %22Instinct%22 and %22Not the Girl You Think You Are%22. Queen Elizabeth II bestowed an OBE on both Neil and Tim Finn, in June 1993, for their contribution to the music of New Zealand.Founding drummer Hester left in May 1994 citing family reasons, but briefly returned for their %22Farewell to the World%22 concerts in Melbourne and Sydney in 1996. Neil Finn had decided to end the band to concentrate on his solo career and the Finn Brothers project with Tim.
