  • American psychedelic rock band from San Francisco, CA. During the late 1960s, the band (along with [a246650]) epitomized San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury culture. The band began in 1965 when singer [a399028] met guitarist [a362004]. They began as a folk-rock group, added lead guitarist [a361998], drummer [a499363], singer [a1198456], and bassist [a2550313], who was soon replaced by [a362002]. The group was signed by [l11358], and their debut album went gold. Anderson left to have a baby and was replaced by [a346261], Spence left to form [a350475] and was replaced by [a399027], which began the group's definitive lineup. They performed at the Woodstock and Altamont festivals but then had its second major shakeup when Dryden left in 1970 to join [a476171] (he was replaced by [a361991]), and the band stopped touring when Slick became pregnant by Kantner. Kaukonen and Casady formed [a381929] In 1971, but remained members of the Airplane. The same year the group formed its own label, [l982249], distributed by RCA. In February 1974 Slick and Kantner officially formed the [a131970], which brought the original phase of the group to a close. The band was inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a Performer.
dbo:abstract
  • Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1965. A pioneer of counterculture-era psychedelic rock, the group was the first band from the San Francisco scene to achieve international mainstream success. They performed at the three most famous American rock festivals of the 1960s—Monterey (1967), Woodstock (1969) and Altamont (1969)—as well as headlined the first Isle of Wight Festival (1968). Their 1967 record Surrealistic Pillow is regarded as one of the key recordings of the %22Summer of Love%22. The album was reported by 1967 to have sold over one and a half million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA. Two hits from that album, %22Somebody to Love%22 and %22White Rabbit%22, are among Rolling Stone's %22500 Greatest Songs of All Time%22.The membership of Jefferson Airplane remained stable from 1967 to early 1970. During that period, they enjoyed success as %22album%22 artists. Between 1967 and 1972 they scored a run of eight consecutive Top 20 albums in the USA, with both Surrealistic Pillow and Crown of Creation making the Top 10. Despite a lack of top ten singles following their initial success, many of their singles still managed to make minor chart positions in the singles chart due in part to the growing influence of FM radio, which played many rock songs that AM radio did not. The group broke up in 1972, and essentially split into the two bands Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. Jefferson Airplane was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
